Industrial Cable Types, Complete Reference Guide

Polycab Distributor · Bengaluru · 9 min read

Specifying a cable for an industrial project requires matching the cable construction to the mechanical, thermal and electrical environment it will operate in. This guide covers every major cable type used in Indian industrial and commercial projects, with the key selection parameters for each.

1. House Wiring (Single Core, PVC, Rigid)

Standards: IS 694 · Voltage: 1.1kV · Sizes: 1.0, 10 sqmm

Single-core, solid or stranded copper conductor, PVC insulated. Used for all fixed wiring in conduit within walls and ceilings. Available in FR and FRLS variants. The most widely used cable in India for residential and light commercial wiring.

Do not use for: Power feeders above 10 sqmm (switch to multi-core power cable), flexible connections, direct burial, or any application with moisture exposure.

2. Multi-Core Unarmoured Power Cable (PVC or XLPE)

Standards: IS 1554 Part 1 (PVC), IS 7098 Part 1 (XLPE) · Voltage: 1.1kV · Sizes: 1.5, 400 sqmm

2, 3, 3.5 or 4 core cables for power distribution. Unarmoured versions are used in cable trays, conduits or suspended installations where no mechanical protection from the ground is needed. XLPE insulation gives 15, 20% higher current rating than equivalent PVC.

Applications: Motor feeders inside a plant building, distribution board to sub-distribution board runs, LT panel feeders.

3. Armoured Power Cable (SWA, Steel Wire Armoured)

Standards: IS 1554 Part 1 (PVC), IS 7098 Part 1 (XLPE) · Voltage: 1.1kV · Sizes: 4, 400 sqmm

Same construction as unarmoured, but with a galvanised steel wire armour layer between inner and outer sheath. The armour provides mechanical protection against crushing and dig-up for underground installation, and provides a low-impedance earth return path.

Applications: Underground power cables, cables running through areas with mechanical damage risk (factory floors, cable entries), any outdoor above-ground installation without conduit protection.

Note: SWA cables must be terminated with appropriate cable glands that grip the armour. The armour must be earthed at both ends for power cables.

4. Medium Voltage XLPE Cable (3.3kV to 33kV)

Standards: IS 7098 Part 2 · Voltage: 3.3kV, 6.6kV, 11kV, 22kV, 33kV · Sizes: 35, 400 sqmm

XLPE insulated, screened, armoured cables for medium voltage distribution. Each core has an individual metallic screen (copper tape or wire) in addition to the outer SWA armour. The screen contains the electric field and provides fault current return path.

Applications: HT feeder from KSEB/BESCOM receiving substation to factory transformer, inter-substation feeders, large campus distribution at 11kV level.

Critical: Medium voltage cable joints and terminations must be done by trained jointers using proper heat-shrink or cold-shrink accessories. MV cable failure is a major safety risk and requires complete excavation and replacement.

5. Flexible Multi-Core Cable (PVC or Rubber)

Standards: IS 694 (PVC flexible), IS 9968 (rubber) · Voltage: 1.1kV · Sizes: 0.5, 16 sqmm

Finely stranded copper conductor (Class 5 or 6) for flexible connections, panel wiring, portable equipment power, machine tool connections, welding cables. The fine stranding resists fatigue from repeated flexing.

Do not use: As fixed wiring in conduit, flexible cable is not rated for fixed installation in most IS standards and degrades faster in conduit than rigid cable.

6. Control Cable (Multi-Core, Screened or Unscreened)

Standards: IS 1554 Part 1 · Voltage: 1.1kV · Sizes: 0.5, 6 sqmm, 2, 61 cores

Small conductor multi-core cables for control circuits, instrumentation signal wiring, PLC I/O connections, relay circuits. Available with individual pair screens (for instrumentation) or overall screen (for general control). Screened versions prevent electromagnetic interference pickup.

Key parameter: Number of cores and conductor size. Typical: 7Ã, 1.5 sqmm for a 7-core control cable. Do not overload control cable conductors, even a small voltage drop across 100m of 1.5 sqmm cable matters in a 24V DC control circuit.

7. Instrumentation Cable (Twisted Pair / Twisted Triad)

Voltage: Low voltage signal level · Sizes: 0.5, 1.5 sqmm, individually screened pairs/triads

Specially constructed for 4, 20mA analogue signals, thermocouple extension, RTD wiring. Individual pair screening with drain wire prevents noise pickup on sensitive signals. Typically rated to 300V since these are signal-level circuits.

Critical selection point: Match cable to signal type, thermocouple extension cable must use the correct thermocouple alloy conductors (not copper) to avoid measurement errors.
